"Robertson is an artist who has a very sophisticated approach to painting, interested in observation, but also in what representational painting means – its limits and complexities" - Dr Sally Quin
Kevin Robertson was born in 1964 in Norseman, a town 725 kilometres east of Perth in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, on the traditional lands of the Ngadju people. Norseman is the last major Western Australian locality passed through by travellers on their journey to eastern Australia, across the world's largest limestone plateau, the Nullabor Plain. Living in the Goldfields fuelled Robertson's childhood imagination and created vivid memories of the environment. - Dr Sally Quin, 'Kevin Robertson Paintings 1984 - 2022'
Reflecting on his lifetime painting in 2022, Robertson stated: "I am lucky that through painting I found a meaningful way to process my experience, to think about the culture I am immersed in and to dream about the future."
"Kevin Robertson has painted his way into Australian art history. He has done this through decades of experimentation with different colour palettes and painterly styles, with realism veering on abstraction and through picturing a wide variety of subjects – from domestic interiors, to empty landscapes and streetscapes, to the wider cosmos beyond.” - Dr Laetitia Wilson, 'Artist’s Chronicle', 2022
Kevin Robertson studied painting at the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University), graduating with a BA in 1984. He was awarded a Master of Arts from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales in 1992 and a Doctorate from Curtin University in 2018.
Kevin Robertson's work is represented in many public and private collections including Artbank, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Wesfarmers, Bankwest, The University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, Kerry Stokes Collection, Janet Holmes à Court Collection, Parliament House, Canberra.
